“Classics in Praxis: Social Values from Clasical Texts” Both Greek and Latin texts refer to timeless values on a social and political level: However, from Pericles’ Epitaph, to Herodotus, Thucydides, and Titus Livius; from Pindar and Aeschylus to Euripides, Seneca and the poets of Rome; from Socrates, Plato and Aristotle to Cicero and Marcus Aurelius; understanding the human condition in Civil Society and Democracy is an ever-changing procedure. Yet, what are the fixed, common values that one encounters in all these texts? And how do they remain consistently timeless to this day? In this conference we will try to highlight the power of Greek and Roman culture in the present and prove that, in an era where constant change is the driving power for progress, the timeless values that emerge from the classical texts still remain relevant.
